Newspaper Front Cover, Riots

Newspaper Front Cover Summary
Firstly, the front cover of a Newspaper I have created for my piece of work is the topic to do with the Riots. The Newspaper I have chosen to create is The Sun, I have therefore chosen The Sun because: the actual papers Genre is a tabloid and less political. The Newspaper that I have created is aimed at a working class audience as the newspaper itself is cheap and for less educated readers.

Secondly, in my front page article I have represented the riots as terrible youths and them to blame for their shocking, violent behaviour. The Ideology is mainly blaming and representing young people/youths as dangerous individuals. In Addition to not only representing the riots; I also managed to represent the police in a positive manner, as they were risking their own lives on the street to tackle rioters and put a stop to them.

Furthermore, before creating my Newspaper article I knew plenty of knowledge about the paper itself. I knew that The Sun itself is persuasive and is less political and its front cover jumps straight to the point in the headline. Knowing the previous knowledge about the particular Newspaper had an interesting effect on my creative decision.  I also chose The Sun because the language is informal and easy to read.

In Conclusion, my decisions were based on viewing different Newspapers and looking at their features such as: the use of language used, text, font and images. Therefore I chose The Sun because it is less political and uses large font - big images that are eye catching and draws attention to readers/audience.

Denotation/Connotation Magazine Essay

How do magazine front covers use, denotation and connotation to attract their intended audience?
Firstly, the Intended Audience for the front cover magazine of Reveal is: young women working class women that are interested in the latest gossip. The magazine itself is also cheap. The magazine also contains bits of latest fashion and make up. The Intended Audience are young women working class women; about celebrity gossip and relationship break ups. The text and gossip is in relation to celebrity couples and relationships.

Secondly, the Connotation of the colour of the front cover reveal magazine is: yellow and pink which are bright colours to; attract their audiences to buy the magazine. The colours are also feminine.  The Connotation of the 2 bright colours is to attract their audience to purchase the magazine as the colours are, eye catching and noticeable.

Moreover, the connotation of the font on the front cover is; bold and thick. The Connotation of this thick standing out bold font has been used to attract audience’s attention and so they consume their magazine. Most of the writing on the front cover is coloured, thick and bold - this has been used to make it easier for audiences to read and notice the text more. The colours of the font; pink, yellow and white are aimed at women; this therefore makes the front cover appear attractive towards their intended audience.

The name of the magazine is Reveal- the name of the magazine reveal has a suspicious meaning, which makes audiences think what is going to be revealed in the magazine. However, the Denotation of the name is to grab audience’s attention and make them assume what is being revealed in the magazine and who and what it is about, this therefore begins to persuade audiences to buy the magazine, and want to find out about the latest gossip.

Furthermore, the layout and design of the front cover magazine; is eye catching for example, the informal language that has been used on the front cover such as; “Sick Ambition- I want to be the world’s fattest woman”. This immediately makes audiences and readers want to read and purchase the magazine as the text sounds shocking. Another design of the magazines name “Reveal” the writing is written in thick white bold. This has been deliberately written; to create audiences to grab their attention and to be able to easily read the name.

The images that have been used are: centred and mainly of couples - written gossip about their relationships. The Connotation of these images are aimed at women for example, a celebrity named Lauren is on the front cover revealing to the public, how her man is immature and has a dark side. The Connotation of this is to immediately interest readers and audiences to want to buy this magazine and find out the latest celebrity gossip.

Moreover, the language of the front cover is informal language; for instance “Free Greggs Doughnut for Every Reader”. The Connotation of this text is persuading readers that whoever reads the magazine – the chances are they will get a free doughnut. The language of this quote is also informal this shows that this magazine is aimed at working class women as it is also only 60p which is a cheap magazine.

The Gender of this magazine is aimed at young women as on the front cover; the images are mostly of women – either about their weight and relationships. The magazine itself is mainly about latest gossip, the front cover talks about gossip such as; celebrity couples cheating on one another and separating from each other: this therefore attracts the intended audience as the text is also written in thick colourful bold writing, for audiences to be able to quickly read.

Furthermore, the Age Range of this magazine is; women aimed at 20-30 year olds. The Connotation of this is because of the information and text on the front cover which is about relationships and couples that are dating. The other information which is on the front cover is about weight, which women are repeatedly obsessed about mainly aged 20-30.

In Conclusion, the Reveal magazines front cover use of: Denotation and Connotation to attract their intended audience is based on the layout and design for example, the magazine contains gossip and bits of fashion – the connotation of this to interest young working class women to persuade them to buy the magazine. Another interest on the front cover that attracts audience’s attention; is the colours of the background font for example, the bright colours that are used: bright yellow and pink. The Connotation of those 2 colours are used to attract their intended audiences, as these bright colours are bright and aimed at women.
